An attack on the poor


 
In his heart Iain Duncan Smith probably endorses - as I do - every word of the open letter (“Welfare reform”, 4 July) from your 31 distinguished correspondents urging him to refrain from a further attack on the poor. Sadly, that does not lie within his power. His paymaster, George Osborne, will carry with him the full support of the Cabinet for a budget which promises both inheritance tax cuts for the rich and tax credit cuts for the poor. The legacy of the Chancellor’s first term in office bodes ill for the future : significant and sustained growth in the wealth gap;.the incomes gap; tax avoidance/evasion; property prices/private rents; personal debt; same-day lenders; food banks; gambling outlets.
