Eamon Duffy (“All God and no religion”, 27 June) does not use the adjective “ambivalence” in divining the poet Seamus Heaney’s attitude towards religious faith and the Catholic Church. However, it could perhaps be said to be less than uniform. Dr Duffy tells us that Heaney “had long ceased attending Mass regularly and did not receive Communion when he did attend”.As it happens, I was concelebrant at the funeral Mass of the late poet and close friend of Heaney’s, Dennis O’Driscoll. I remember clearly that Seamus Heaney presented himself to me for Communion on that sad occasion. Needless to say I was glad to share the Eucharist with him, which I recall, that for some strange reason or instinct, I offered Seamus in the Gaelic version of t
