You report on insensitive redundancies in the Diocese of Brentwood (News from Britain and Ireland, 4 July). Meanwhile Bishop Williams’ successor as Rector of Walsingham, recently Vicar-General of the same diocese, is planning a £10 million development of the shrine. Whilst some proposals are welcome – the Pilgrim Bureau needs updated facilities and minor improvements to the shrine itself, refectory, toilets etc. – one must question the expense and necessity of others. Does the shrine need a new Conference Centre accommodating groups of 100 plus or a new Catholic Media Centre both of which might well be located elsewhere?.I am a member of the Walsingham Association, deeply devoted to the shrine.
