Pope Francis’ green encyclical


 
It is gratifying that Nicholas Stern (“Green light for the future”, 27 June), who has long been within the minority who argued for genuinely sustainable living, welcomes Laudato si’. The encyclical will move Catholic Social Teaching in a more environmentally inclusive way. However, I was sad that Michael McCarthy (“The case for national salvation”, 27 June) had found that his faith had faded. He is right to say that church leaders too long ignored the preciousness of the Earth and preached an anthroposolic message. But there always were some, including leaders and theologians who, like Stern, argued for care of the Earth as God’s frail and beautiful creation for which, under God, we are responsible.
