Shortage of priests


 
Basil Loftus (Letters, 20 June), referring to Bishop Leo O’Reilly’s concern about the shortage of priests in his diocese, raises the matter of inviting priests who have married to return to some form of ministry.In my parish, we are without a resident priest since Mgr Patrick McKinney has been appointed Bishop of Nottingham. We are told that Sunday Masses will be assured, thanks to neighbouring priests, and that there will be daily Service of the Word and Communion until the appointment of a replacement at some date as yet unspecified. I was ordained in 1962, served in parishes in Shrewsbury diocese and worked in Rwanda before requesting a dispensation to marry which was eventually granted. I have been a parishioner here for more than 30 years and several people have commented
