As an Evangelical Anglican, I find The Tablet’s reporting fair and balanced. However, that view was somewhat shattered when I read Jonathan Tulloch’s article on Mary Ward (“A woman ahead of her time”, 12 October). Whatever you believe about history, to equate some Elizabethans with the Gestapo in their treatment of Catholics is using extreme language. My ancestor, a Mr Verrier, had to escape the persecution of Huguenots in France in the 1600s, but I do not go around describing the French of that time as the Gestapo.
Whether Tulloch likes it or not, the Reformation happened and as a result the Church in England was transformed. Without it we would not have had, albeit later, the likes of Wesley and Whitfield who brought about good change in the Church and nation. A
