It is heartening to hear Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin admitting that the Irish Church needs to take a “reality check” and to “re-engage with young people” after the gay marriage referendum (see News from Britain and Ireland). The question remains as to whether the “re-engaging” is about looking to teach or to listen. In my view, the “re-engagement” needed is about the latter. In listening they may hear something of the Christian values which underpinned the decision by so many young Irish people to vote as they did.
