Loss of sense


 
Fr Leo Chamberlain OSB (Letters, 21 March) claims that we are much better off with the present (2010) translation of the Mass. If you consider that this version is used all over the English-speaking world where a lot of people do not understand the “language of metaphor”, then there is a problem. It has been said that the new version is as close to the Latin as possible so that translations into other languages can also reflect the Latin. Recently I celebrated the Eucharist in a vernacular language here in Uganda which I know well, using a text that had been translated from the English. It was almost unintelligible.
