If Marcus Walker is seeking a Roman venue for the return Vatican-Lambeth cricket match (Letter from Rome, 7 March) he might bear in mind the villa and grounds at Palazzola, home of the English College summer retreat. As befits a good Yorkshire prelate, Arthur Hinsley, as rector, bought Palazzola in 1920, and the seminarians themselves, we are told, prepared the site, laying out the cricket pitch. The wicket still remains; the concrete strip awaits its matting wicket though the outfield would require no little attention to restore it to playing condition.
