Much too careful


 
I agree with Clifford Longley’s critique (“Too meek for today’s politics”, 28 February) of the letter from the Catholic bishops of England and Wales setting out issues to be considered ahead of the general election. It is much less pointed than the recent analysis by the bishops of the Church of England. But, in straining for subtlety and in attempting to ameliorate, the Catholic bishops miss a trick. This is a shame, especially as the Church on the ground plays a pivotal role in identifying injustice and inequality.In contrast, in his interview with Andrew Marr on BBC1, Cardinal Vincent Nichols made an impressive and forceful case for social justice.
