A caricature of More?


 
Why is preferring Thomas Cromwell to Thomas More perceived as “putting off Catholics”? (Notebook, 14 February). Both were men of their time, a mix of good and bad, and both carried out actions that today would be completely unacceptable. Wolf Hall has been criticised for being “anti-Catholic” but, like many others, I enjoyed the books and am currently watching the excellent BBC dramatisation. It shows events from Cromwell’s point of view and so naturally give a different perspective on More to that portrayed in A Man for All Seasons.
