Ungracious and short-sighted absence


 
You report (News from Britain and Ireland, 31 January) that “no one from the Catholic Church was present in an official capacity at Monday’s service in York Minster” when the Revd Libby Lane was ordained a bishop of the Church of England, although you also report that the Bishop of Shrewsbury, Mark Davies, and the Carmelite Provincial, Fr Tony Lester, were invited. Neither attended, however, due to “a prior engagement” and “a bout of toothache” respectively. You further report that Bishop Lane’s installation as Bishop of Stockport will be on 8 March, and that Bishop Davies “is likely again to receive an invitation to attend”.
