As the initiators and writers of the letter signed by some 230 Cafod supporters expressing great concern at the proposed closure of the diocesan offices, we welcome the letter from Bishop John Arnold, chairman of trustees (Letters, 31 January). Bishop Arnold’s letter appears to indicate a shift in Cafod’s thinking in response to the storm of protest and raises the hope that the closures and related redundancies may be avoided. We fervently hope so. Whatever is proposed should surely be done in the context not just of financial constraints, but of Pope Francis’ central theme of being “a poor Church for the poor”.Two actions by Cafod’s senior management are now needed to allay supporters’ concerns.
