In her interesting article on the former editors of The Tablet (“Journal of a journey”, 3 January), Catherine Pepinster mentions some horrors of recent times, such as the martyrdom of Oscar Romero and others. She includes the Jesuits of Algeria. Perhaps she was thinking of the Jesuits of El Salvador. In Algeria, 19 Religious lost their lives in the 1990s; of these, six were women Religious (Augustinians, Our Lady of the Missions and Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart) and 13 were men – Pierre Claverie, Bishop of Oran, who was a Dominican; seven Trappists; four Missionaries of Africa; and Henri Vergès, who, if I am not mistaken, belonged to an order of Brothers.
