Sectarianism is back


 
Michael G. Ryan (“Mission intelligible”, 29 November) says that Liturgiam Authenticam (LA) is “in force” and should be “revoked”. But isn’t it invalid already? It contradicts the Decree on Ecumenism which has a much higher authority. This encourages common prayer with separated brethren; LA does the opposite: “Great caution should be taken to avoid a wording or style” that Catholics would confuse with the manner of speech of Protestants. How could this have happened? The great ecumenist Michael Hurley SJ wrote in 1998 that the Vatican II document was “to a large extent a dead letter”. This is even more true now.
