Your excellent article on humanism (“Humanism belongs to believers”, 6 December) could be extended by a consideration of free will – the twin gift, along with reason, from God to human nature. It is widely regarded as illusory, particularly among neuroscientists. Understandably so, because an uncaused choice has no place in a wholly materialist universe. Unfortunately its absence makes a nonsense of moral choice, moral responsibility, praise and blame.Quentin de la Bedoyere, L
