Jonathan Tulloch’s eloquent and coherent article “Against the tide” (8 November) gladdened my heart – so thank you for publishing it.In a number of ways it is timely: from recently personal experience, I am becoming aware of conscientious objectors (COs) lurking in people’s family recollections – some having been regarded as disgraceful in the past. Many of the children of COs are now in their seventies, downsizing, clearing out attics and finding family papers. It is time for an appeal for people to check what they have (before they dispose of it) to connect with those who are following up this aspect of the history of the First World War.
