I'm sure the “reluctant communicants” who are unwilling to receive from the chalice as mentioned by Sarah T.M. Bell (“Cleaning the chalice”, Letters, 8 November) would have little trouble receiving from the chalice by intinction. This practice is not permitted by the Congregation for Worship presumably because it does away with the “and drink from it” instruction by the Lord. However, I did notice that Pope Francis himself did give Communion by intinction (on the tongue) when he recently visited South Korea. I know that symbolism is all-important in the sacraments, but because of large numbers we compromise and each receive a small host and not from one broken loaf, so I can see no contradiction in each communicant receiving the host and then going to s
