A subsidy to the First World


 
Thank you for Denis MacShane’s article on immigration (“Migration: truths and untruths”, 15 November). It will be a hot issue at the next elections. Most parties, however, accept that skilled immigrants should be accepted as they will make a substantial contribution to the UK. This ignores the morality of luring people from undeveloped countries where their skills are needed. A case in point is ebola. If Sierra Leone had adequate medical services, the epidemic could perhaps have been halted earlier.Then there is the cost of the training of skilled persons. As a person training social workers in Zimbabwe, I know that almost 300 of my former students work in – and make a contribution to – UK social services.
