Cafod’s cuts are misplaced


 
I was dismayed by your report (News from Britain and Ireland, 15 November) that Cafod proposes to close 19 diocesan offices, make some 50 staff redundant and then expect their vital work to be done – in part or largely – by volunteers based in offices covering four vast regions. This would be a grave error and hugely damage Cafod’s interests.In 1990 along with three Cafod staff, I was asked by the then director to evaluate Cafod’s regional structure. Having consulted widely, we reported that the then seven regions were “far too large” especially in relation to Cafod’s support and income. We recommended that the number of regions be increased from seven to 12, with more staff and a greater involvement of volunteers. That paved the way for the prese
