Cleaning the chalice


 
I have recently asked a number of people – having been an extraordinary minister of Communion – why they do not avail themselves of the gift offered at the Eucharist of the blood of Christ.Many say they are afraid of catching some disease, which assumes they think God’s gift is a dangerous thing. I can understand this in these days of “God preserve us from dying, or perhaps rather NHS preserve us from dying!” but I have also noticed that many of the clergy are merely going through the motions of wiping the chalice between communicants rather than make it look like a decent cleaning job to prevent infection. Could there be perhaps be some revision of this practice to encourage reluctant communicants who are unwilling at the moment to accept the chalice of salv
