Mercenary attitudes


 
Those bishops who support international peace in the Holy Land do an excellent job in encouraging pilgrims to visit the area. But the Christians in the country itself need to get their act together with immediate effect. I have been leading groups and coming privately to the Holy Land for 25 years and I see a serious decline of welcome and hospitality from those who run the holy places. It appears that the people in charge have become entirely mercenary. On entering some holy sites these days the first thing to hit you is a kiosk for entrance fees and demands for money. In two places we had pre-booked a Mass slot and on both occasions I was told, in a hostile way, that the group had to pay for the use of the site.
