Too long a wait for lectionary


 
It is disappointing to read (“Commission closure ‘lost opportunity’”, News from Britain and Ireland, 18 October) of the disbanding of the International Commission for the Preparation of an English Language Lectionary. How much longer can English-speaking communities outside North America realistically make use of a Jerusalem Bible lectionary? Its translation from the French is now almost 50 years old. While we continue to wait for a lectionary from the original biblical languages – and thus conform to Dei Verbum 22 – English-language styles will continue to evolve and biblical understandings will continue to develop. Our Liturgy of the Word surely deserves better.This disappointment must be especially hard for all those who have done so much to prepare
