What a shame so little attention is being paid to the collateral damage caused by the lifestyle of our bishop, Kieran Conry (“I felt I had done wrong and I must go”, 4 October). Is this the same mind-set which in the past supported and covered up sexual irregularities with no regard to the victims? The pain, damage and embarrassment caused to adolescent children seeing their mother and the bishop all over the national press has received scant sympathy and the praise being heaped on the bishop can only increase the sense of betrayal suffered by the adults concerned. We are all grateful for the work he has done as a bishop over the years, but we should be mindful of the dictum of St Francis, “Preach the Gospel … and when necessary use words”. (Mrs) P. H. Pursl
