Retiring popes


 
There is something very incarnational and practical about having a retirement home for popes (“A very uncollegial row”, 23 August). As Bishops Emeritus of Rome, they have every right to spend the remainder of their lives being cared for with dignity and respect. Benedict XVI is to be congratulated for accepting his humanity and the frailties of old age to pave the way both for another papal election and for future popes to step aside.
