IN HIS EXCELLENT ARTICLE (“Divine evolution”, 23 August), Fr Daniel O’Leary asks, “Who will open for us this sacramental vision of the ‘New Universe Story?’” He answers his question by citing Teilhard de Chardin, Ilia Delio, Elizabeth Johnson and, I would add, Jack Mahoney, who have written with clear authority about how the concept of evolution is key to understanding Creation and formulating a Christian anthropology. These theologians have issued a wake-up call on how to make Christian theology meaningful and reasonable in the twenty-first century. Unfortunately, Roman authorities have discouraged us from reading these sources. They forbade Chardin from teaching or publishing his thinking on evolution. Most recently, Cardinal Gerhard Müller
