Roots of violence


 
I was surprised at Terry Philpot’s severe criticisms (Letters, 16 August) of Baroness Warsi’s concerns about the disproportionate slaughter of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the destruction of their homes and infrastructure. Pope Paul VI’s words of January 1972 came to my mind: “If you want peace, work for justice.”While not condoning the terrorism of Hamas or the PLO, I can remember old boys of my school and older work colleagues talking about serving in Palestine at the time when Zionist paramilitary groups, such as the Irgun, were active and branded as terrorists by Britain.
