Your article on surrogacy (“What about the child?”, 16 August) fails to acknowledge that there are many women who are unable to carry their own child, through no fault of their own. One in 5,000 women suffer from MRKH, a syndrome where the uterus never develops in the female baby, although in all other respects the adult reproductive organs operate normally. So they produce eggs, which can be fertilised by their husband to found a family. The only alternative to surrogacy is a uterine transplant which has only recently been trialled, so complex and dangerous is it for both donor and recipient.
