Michael Goodstadt (Letters, 9 August) displays an interesting distinction between the theory and practice of pastoral care in the reality of parish life (Parish Practice, 28 June). A qualified person with the professional competence to employ and interpret personality assessment should lead an MBTI workshop – but having determined the personality types involved in a parish group, that information can provide the framework for self-understanding, as well as improve the understanding of others. My workshops help people live more harmoniously together, so why is that not good parish practice? Using MBTI and other psychological instruments in pastoral care is, through the pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes (62) and so the Magisterium, the teachings of the Church.Kit Dollard, Amplefor
