A wife’s support


 
Peter Simmons (Letters, 26 July) doubts that any man could do justice to both priestly ordination and marriage, but my own experience as an Anglican priest in the Catholic tradition does not bear this out. My wife has been my greatest support in ministry throughout over 40 years of our marriage and my priesthood. She shares my problems, apart, naturally, from matters which are confidential between individuals and me, and she has no hesitation in telling me when I develop any unwelcome traits in presiding at the Eucharist or preaching.It is true that I have been greatly blessed in marrying a wife who has a clear vocation to being a clergy spouse, and clearly there could, of course, have been enormous tensions if she had not felt this calling.
