In your account of a lecture by the Bishop of East Anglia (News from Britain and Ireland, 12 July), you report him as saying that when Vatican II's Constitution on the Liturgy urged “active participation in worship”, “This did not mean everyone had to be involved in playing a role … but that they should be prayerfully attentive”. Perhaps the bishop should read the Constitution again. Article 14 says that “Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy”, and article 30 spells out what this entails: “By way of promoting active participation, the people should be encouraged to take part by means of accla
