Three months ago Bishop Erwin Kräutler of Xingu, Brazil’s largest diocese, met Pope Francis (The Church in the World, 12 April). The bishop told Pope Francis that people were being deprived of the Eucharist because of the shortage of priests. A mere 27 priests serve Xingu’s 700,000 Catholics scattered throughout the rainforest.
