Lost sense, lost experiences


 
The survey of Irish clergy condemning the new translation of the Missal is welcome (News from Britain and Ireland, 14 June). When one hears on the media or attends a Eucharist in the Church of England, one is pleasantly surprised to immediately understand the prayer. Our current rendering is like a series of puzzles where one has about five seconds to work out the meaning before the next battery of clues are heard. The sense is then lost and one is driven simply to ignore what is being said aloud. The current disregard by the institutional Church of the opinion and requirements of participating Christians is particularly lamentable when one recalls that there is an excellent 1998 translation waiting in the wings which was passed unanimously by all the English-speaking bishops’ confe
