Evils within


 
I’ve just read Karen Kilby’s very moving article about facing the genocide in Rwanda. (“Thinking the unthinkable”, 12 April). I have no answers, of course, to the questions – such honest ones – that she raises. But it seems to me that, faced with the evils of the past, and the many evils of the present that we know are going on all around us, what Kilby calls “this – and other – massive unthinkable evils”, we must first of all acknowledge that they are within us all. “Unthinkable” as they are, we are all (or at least I am) capable of holding that hatred, that cruelty, that inhumanity, within myself.
