A backward step


 
This has been a bad week for Northern Ireland. First the former US diplomat Dr Richard Haass, having been involved for six months in talks with the five main political parties at Stormont, advised a ­congressional committee in Washington that he feared Northern Ireland could slip back into ­violence if neighbourhoods and schools were still divided. Alas, as if to underline his concerns, in Armagh – the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland – the local St Patrick’s College suddenly reverses its policy to be relocated in a new shared school campus with all other local schools and instead has now decided to build new premises on a site separate and some distance from the proposed campus!
