This has been a bad week for Northern Ireland. First the former US diplomat Dr Richard Haass, having been involved for six months in talks with the five main political parties at Stormont, advised a ­congressional committee in Washington that he feared Northern Ireland could slip back into ­violence if neighbourhoods and schools were still divided.
