I write to say how offensive I found the remarks by Cardinal Sarah regarding Communion in the hand (“Handle with reverence”, 3 March). As Thomas O’Loughlin in his excellent article pointed out, this way of receiving Communion goes back to the earliest times and was always handled with reverence.
