Dereliction of the Church’s duty


 
Michael Holman (“Nourishing hearts and informing minds”, 4 January) quotes the newly canonised St Peter Faber. “I grieve that our leaders busy themselves with trivialities, that highly gifted men are preoccupied with paltry nothings … the first and foremost duty of the ministers of the Church is to feed the flock of Christ.” The same week’s News from Britain and Ireland highlights the ­difficulties of Birmingham and Northampton in providing priests.Catholic MPs in March appealed to the new Pope to ordain married men. A few validly ordained from each parish is an obvious and simple solution, but one apparently difficult to accept. What actually are the problems which prevent the flock of Christ from being fed?
