I can easily imagine that Pope Francis, when he had read the eight-page letter from Juan Carlos Cruz about Fr Karadima and Bishop Barros (News, 10 February), found its contents so outlandish that he, quite honestly, refused to believe it, and dismissed it. That does not mean that Juan Carlos Cruz was lying, only that what he described was too horrible to be believed. To find a parallel for what Karadima was doing, I am drawn to compare it with the behaviour at Bishop Kurt Krenn’s Swiss seminary.
