The moving account of Jacques Dupuis’ cruel treatment at the hands of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (“Theologian on the ropes”, 12 August) reminds me of my own experience 16 years ago when I was very publicly appointed and unappointed as theology tutor at Rome’s Venerable English College in a matter of days. There was the same whiff of sulphur that one detects in Dupuis’ case.
