Your editorial (“In praise of workers’ rights”, 15 July) is sympathetic to the Taylor report. But the case for a special legal status for the “gig” economy is meretricious.

These so-called “new things” are nothing different from casual employment, which has been known since time immemorial: how, after all, were dockers employed in the 1950s?
