Notebook (“Kennedy’s Cathedral”, 30 November) contains a terrible truth. It appears quite possible that if one of the many Cold War false alarms or a real aggression by the Soviet Union had occurred in June 1961, then President Kennedy might have launched a genocidal, planet-threatening retaliation from the special phone installed at Clergy House, Westminster. In such ways we are all involved, even at the centre of our “Christian” life, in the myth of deterrence an
