Jesus' view on remarried to communion

Fr. Michael Walsh (Letters, 7 November) gives what he sees as a biblical justification for not admitting the remarried to communion.

He speaks (quoting St. Paul) of ‘not approaching the Eucharist unworthily’.

We are none of us worthy.

He holds that ‘those who have fallen from perfection should abstain from the sacraments’.

None have ‘fallen from perfection’ for none of us has attained perfection. If the sacraments are only for the worthy and the perfect, what hope for us?

But, thank God, a reading of the ancient texts to which Fr. Walsh refers also reveals the mercy, love and compassion of Christ, and his welcome to all who come to Him.

It’s perhaps worth remembering that Jesus celebrated the very first Eucharist with those who would – as Jesus probably knew – very shortly betray, deny and desert Him.

Let us be thankful for our Pope, who reminds us that the Eucharist is not a reward for the perfect, but a medicine for sinners.
