Abortion as intrinsically evil

Dear Editor,

Michael Sean Winters in writing to you from Washington with his article being published under the heading, Showdown in Baltimore, makes an error in describing abortion as being intrinsically evil.

An abortion is a premature expulsion of an embryo or foetus,

A miscarriage is a sad form of abortion.

It becomes evil when the adjectives- induced, medically or surgically are used, or should have been  be used.

Mr Winters is far from being alone in being medically and legally imprecise with the use of this word.

Many women may and have felt angry and embarrassed when they are said to have experienced an - abortion when they have had, a miscarriage.

Yours kindly,

Tom W Reilly, Edinburgh
