Liturgical damage to the English language

More than 18 months ago Gerald O’Collins wrote in your newspaper an open letter to the English-speaking Bishops of the world urging action on the newly produced translation of the Roman Missal which had met with serious and detailed criticism on so many grounds.

None of the unsatisfactory elements of Vox Clara’s work have been addressed nor has there been any indication of a willingness on the part of the English and Welsh bishops to seek a remedy.

We are left with congregations far less willing to respond to once familiar prayers and some who understandably stick to the ‘old’ version.

Would it not be prudent and sensible for our Bishops to recognise the scale of the error they made in not asserting themselves earlier and to begin a process of reparation for the damage done to the liturgy and to the English language?
