Remarrieds and priests: what's the difference?

Dear Ms Pepinster,

What is the difference between a lay person who has divorced and re-married, and a celibate priest who enters into a long-term, sexual relationship? 

Both appear to fall short of their sacramental promises of fidelity, but only the lay person is excluded from the Eucharist.
