Identity crisis in Eastern Europe

Dear Sir,

Further to your debate on the reluctance of Eastern European countries to take in refugees from the Middle East, perhaps we need to recall a bit of history.

The whole of what is now Eastern Europe, including Hungary and former Yugoslavia and nearby countries, formed part of the Ottoman Empire in the not so distant past.

Since the end of World War I they have been trying to discover their identity and recover from religious suppression.

I, for one, am not surprised by their reluctance to open their borders to Muslims, even though I would hope that their Christian background would overcome their fear.

In all charity and compassion we have to remember their rather recent past and pray that they overcome it.

Yours faithfully,

Mary Cole, Bolton
