Laity quicker to take on Pope's call than bishop

Oh, that our hierarchy would indeed speak up!

I identify with Godwin Pullicino (Tablet, 1st and again on the 22nd August) in his appeal to our bishops to contribute to the discussion.

He refers to the issue of married clergy where the voice of our bishops together with that of the laity (John Howes, Tablet, 8th August) is urgently sought.

The laity have been rather more vocal in anticipating and responding to Pope Francis's call to humanity in Laudato Si' to respect the planet we share: the bishops on the other hand have been conspicuously silent where the issue of anthropogenic global warming, related poverty and the government's drive for shale gas is concerned. My own attempts to communicate with the Bishops' Conference on the shale gas issue have not been favoured with an acknowledgement, a source of distress here in beleaguered Ryedale.

I am,

Yours sincerely,

David Cragg-James, Stonegrave, York
