Priests: don't deface God's art by denying people Communion

I was so sad to read (The Tablet, 14 March) that 12 priests are endeavouring to "turn back the clock" on the more forward thinking and positive outcomes of last year's Synod on the Family. I am hoping that the tenor of the letter will be more encouraging and less draconian that it sounds at present.

I feel these priests are seeing the wood and not the Cross and the all-embracing love and mercy which pours from it. Christ died for us all with our inherent frailties, weaknesses and our ongoing struggles in our own particular lives. It appears harsh and particularly upsetting from the clergy on the ground, who are authentic witnesses to the problems which people face in our complicated multi-faceted world. Of course there have to be rules but surely they can be implemented with grace and compassion and to deny communion to the divorced and remarried seems in my way of thinking contrary to Christ's ministry on earth. He was pragmatic and dealt kindly with
his flock and would I feel appreciate that there is not always one incontrovertible answer to every scenario.

In the Second Reading of last Sunday's Mass, Paul states that: "We are God's work of art", and that "God loved us with so much love". So to deny fellow members of our
community his sustenance seems wilfully to deface their own particular and beautiful canvases painted by God.
