Victims of Auschwitz

Mary Dejevsky in “Emerging truths” (The Tablet, 24 January) writes that “Poland has begun to acknowledge its own anti-Semitic past”. Yet Poland for hundreds of years was the only country to give Jews sanctuary and legal rights. No other country has more people awarded Righteous by Yad Vashem despite the fact that in no other German-occupied lands was there a mandatory death penalty for providing shelter to Jews.

She also writes of “the speed of the Red Army’s advance” Yet the Red Army parked itself outside Warsaw and waited while the Germans destroyed the city and were murdering the occupants during and after the Warsaw uprising.

Poles are the second biggest category of victims killed at Auschwitz. They also outnumber all the other non-Jewish categories added together.
