Learning difficulties and the Church

Congratulations on the excellent article (The Tablet, 17 January) by Gail Williams. This would have been better still had it mentioned two important groups in the worldwide Church.

The L’Arche Communities, founded by Jean Vanier, bring together volunteer and intellectually handicapped people in permanent residential communities. These exist in England, Wales and Ireland, and many other countries. Faith and Light is an off-shoot of L’Arche. It enables families with one or more handicapped members, to meet together for mutual support and spiritual development. Groups can be found in most English diocese, as well as worldwide, even in Moscow. Both kinds of groups function ecumenically, and sometimes have members form other faiths.
